Following the trends in the tactical requirements of the use of automatic rifles, Zastava oružje AD has developed a new MCS model. Compared to other manufacturers, Zastava oružje AD has gone one step further by offering a rifle that, in addition to easy barrel replacement and the possibility of using barrels of different lengths, also enables a change of caliber and a choice between the conventional 7.62×39 mm and the new 6.5 mm caliber. The reason for the introduction of the new caliber is that the 6.5 mm round has a number of ballistic advantages compared to the 7.62×39 mm that allow for a significantly longer range, as well as greater efficiency and penetrating power at all distances, and at the same time it is possible to keep all the vital parts of the rifle and switch to another caliber just by replacing the barrel and magazine. The easy change of caliber has a number of logistical advantages in terms of easy adaptation to situations in the field.
The design of the MCS rifle is based on the existing platform of rifles that Zastava arms is known for and which operate on the Kalashnikov system. The modification is reflected in the design of the transverse lock on the receiver, which enables easy and quick exchange of the barrel, without disassembling the rifle and without using tools. In addition to barrels in different calibers, within one caliber there are different barrel lengths (254 mm and 415 mm), which allows the rifle to be quickly adapted to the most diverse combat situations. Changing the caliber of the rifle also requires changing the magazine, and the magazines are clearly marked and noticeably different.
The rifle has been in use in the Army of the Republic of Serbia since 2025.

The ergonomics of the rifle are exceptional because, in addition to the ambidextrous controls (charging handle, magazine catch, fire selector), the shape of the stock and the mass distribution ensure a balanced system without large recoils.
